Topic: How to make a quadcopter drone using kk 2.1.5 flight controller

Hello everyone! Welcome to Arduino Geek. Today we will discuss about a drone using kk 2.1.5 flight controller. So let's get started.

What is drone and how does it works?

Drone is a very popular flying kit among all the peoples. Drone is easy to fly and easy to build. Even we can avoid the problem of balancing in the drone by using the gyro sensors. Drone is easy to control via transmitters in wide range of distance. Drone comes with different types of shape and size. The main work of the drone is to fly in the sky, but it also comes with some more functionality like camera and gps.

What are the different types of drone?

There are many types of drone available in the market which are trycopter, quadcopter, hexacopter and octacopter. All this types of drone have their different uses and application. They are used in different fields according to their functionality.

  • Trycopter – Trycopter is the one of the simplest form of drone. It has three rotating arms. Generally it is not used by the people because it is not stable at the time of flying.
  • Quadcopter – Quadcopter is the simplest form of drone. It is the most popular and most common among the users. Most of the people like to fly a quadcopter because it is stable and easy to control. It gives a smooth fly than any other types of drone. A quadcopter has four rotating arms in which two motors are rotating in clockwise direction and the other two will rotate in anti-clockwise direction.
  • Hexacopter – Hexacopter is another form of a drone. It is quite complex then the other types of drone. Hexacopter has six rotating arms which rotates clockwise and anti-clockwise simultaneously.
  • Octacopter – Octacopter is the most complex form of the drone and it is not easy to control. It has eight rotating arms.

How much does a drone cost?

The cost of the drone may vary according to their functionality. The toy grade drone are coming with a price range of INR 5000 to INR 6000 in India, where the hobby grade drone are coming with a price range of INR 45,000. The price also differs due to the quality and size of the drone. The cost of the popular brands like DJI are much costlier than the other brands drone.

How do you make a drone using kk 2.1.5 flight controller?

Drone is very easy to build. By following some simple steps you can easily build your drone. In this post I will describe the process of building a quadcopter using kk 2.1.5 flight controller. For making a simple quadcopter drone you have to do through the simple steps like – assembling the frame, designing the circuit by using kk 2.1.5 flight controller, calibrating the sensors and gyro. If you successfully done all this steps without any mistake, then your drone will ready to fly. Now take a look into the steps one by one.

Components -

(1) Drone Frame
(2) BLDC Motor
(3) ESC
(4) KK 2.1.5 Flight Controller
(5) Transmitter & Receiver
(6) Lipo Battery

Assembling of Frame –

At first take all the parts which are required to build the frame. Take all the four arms of the drone and fix it in the pcb board. Use the screw to tight the arms with the pcb. Now take the landing gears and fix it in the bottom side of the frame. Then connect the upper pcb to the drone and fix it with the screw.

At the end of each arms you have to connect one brushless dc motor. It is recommended to use the brushless motor of 1000 KVA. Fix the motors at the arm by using the screws.

How to connect esc to brushless motor?

Finally you have to connect the ESC in the brushless motors. There are three output pins of ESC. You have to connect the left and right pin of the ESC with the left and right pin of brushless motor. Then connect the middle pin of the ESC with the middle pin of brushless motor. If you need to change the direction of the brushless motor in future, then you simply interchange the connection of the left and right pin of ESC with the brushless motor.

How to bind flysky transmitter and receiver?

The next important thing is to bind the receiver with the transmitter. For binding the receiver and transmitter you need to follow some basic steps which are –

(1) Give a 5 volt power supply to the receiver. You can use an esc to power up the receiver. You can see a red light is blinking inside the receiver.

(2) Now connect the binding cable in the bat channel of the receiver.

(3) Keep pressing the bind button in the transmitter, and then switch on the transmitter.

(4) At that time the red light of the receiver will stop blinking and the light is in stand still position. This indicates that the binding is done successfully.

Now it’s time to build the circuit by using kk 2.1.5 flight controller. For this you have to place the kk flight controller at the middle of your quadcopter. Here we are making X mode quadcopter. For an x mode quadcopter the configuration of the kk flight controller is like this –

How do I connect my ESC to my flight controller?

Once you placed the kk flight controller in your drone, you need to connect the esc in the flight controller. Now connect the four esc in the four respective pins of kk flight controller. Always remember that the signal pin of the esc will be placed just beside the Lcd screen. Also you need to do the connection between the receiver and flight controller. Connect all channels of receiver with the respective channels of flight controller.

How do I connect my kk flight controller to my receiver?

(1) Channel 1 of receiver – Aileron channel

(2) Channel 2 of receiver – Elevator channel

(3) Channel 3 of receiver – Throttle channel

(4) Channel 4 of receiver – Rudder channel

(5) Channel 5 of receiver – Aux channel

KK 2.1.5 flight controller setup –

Now it’s time to setup the kk 2.1.5 flight controller. Give the power supply to the drone and follow the steps to setup the flight controller.

(1) At first click on the menu button and then go to the “load motor layout”.

(2) From here you have to select the proper layout of your drone. In our case the layout will be “quadcopter x mode”.

(3) Then open the acc calibration. Place the quadcopter on a flat surface and wait for five second. In this time the acc will be calibrated to its proper value. Do not move the drone in this time period.

(4) Then go to the self-level settings and select the self-level for always. This settings will help the quadcopter to balance itself. As a result you will get a stable fly.

(5) After this calibrate the PID values for aileron, elevator and rudder.

(6) Finally do the esc calibration and throttle calibration for better result.

Finally you have done all the important steps including circuit building, setup of kk flight controller and calibration. So its time to fly the drone in the sky. For this you have to connect the battery and propeller in the drone.

How do you install propeller in drone?

Choosing the correct propeller for correct drone is very important. The flying capability of the drone is totally dependent on the propeller. The propellers of drone never spin in the same direction. For a quadcopter two propeller will spin in clockwise direction and two will spin in anti-clockwise direction. The thrust of every propeller is always downward. You have to use the connectors to connect the propellers in the brushless motor.

How do you setup the 1045 propeller in the drone?

In a pair of 1045 propeller one is used for clockwise (CW) rotation and another one is used for counter clockwise (CCW) rotation. The letter “R” in the propeller indicates that the propeller is for counter clockwise (CCW) rotation.

(1)  “1045” propeller is used for clockwise rotation.

(2) “1045R” propeller is used in counter clockwise rotation.
